Mylor Creek, Falmouth

The Property:

The property is a creekside seventies style Bungalow

The Client Brief:

The client had recently sold her extensive family home and was downsizing to this bungalow. She was struggling on what to keep, what to buy, and how to make this fit her personality and retiring years. She had masses of antique furniture and antiquities and yet although some of these had sentimental value, many she wanted to replace. The property in itself wasn’t that pleasing to the eye, but its location was spectacular. Internally the property was painted yellow everywhere. The client had a very good idea of what she liked and disliked.

Initially she asked Elaine Skinner at Hops and Camellias to just get her bedroom redesigned and redecorated and refurnished but very quickly the brief grew. Elaine ended up working with here over a couple of years in small chunks, completely renovating, extending and refurbishing the bungalow.

Our Process:

Elaine started out by spending time with the client getting to know what she loved and how she wanted to spend her day in the property. This became a process to filter out how the property currently didn’t work for her client.

The Result:

The end result was not a yellow wall in sight! Elaine and the client often laughed about this. This was a very personal service and a very close relationship where client and designer got to know each other very well, which is why the end result is such a success. Elaine through her Masters study, has a thorough knowledge of what is needed to make retirement an enjoyable phase. It’s often very hard to leave homes where you have brought up your family and lived for many years to downsize, but it is one that many people feel is necessary. Working with Elaine turned out to be a great success and the property has increased in value enormously as a result of this.
