Living Room at a Glance Who lives here : Mr and Mrs Harvey Location : St Ives, Cornwall Designer : Hops and Camellias Ltd Size : 5 Bedrooms, 4 Bathrooms and a Cinema Room The seafront view from this property’s lounge always meant the room had a clear advantage when it came to designing the interior. The team at Hops and Camellias wanted to create a relaxed environment that reflected the coastal views without being too typically ‘seaside-y’ and without overpowering the stunning outlook on to the St Ives landscape. Apart from touches of yellow, the living room is largely decorated in soft grey tones – referencing the glimmering stone of St Ives’ pretty harbour. The owners deliberately shunned design classics – favouring a more original approach to their interior. “They have quite eclectic taste, which is infused with a touch of midcentury modern, so the challenge was to marry different pieces effortlessly” says Design Director, Elaine. A penchant for individual designs led Hops and Camellias to commission bespoke, handmade pieces -including the chairs and sofas – many of which are now available to buy through Hops and Camellias. Muted wallpapers create a soothing backdrop that works in harmony with the gentle lines of the furniture. The original fireplace had been ripped out by the previous owner, so the team reinstated an electric fire with a design in keeping with the era of the house to rebalance the proportions of the room. Camellia’s design scheme has successfully created a contemporary coastal getaway using bespoke furnishings and accents of colour – all working to enhance the breathtaking seafront views.
